Purpose of the DrFirst EPCS Hard Token

DrFirst Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) requires providers to complete a two‑factor authentication (2FA) process each time they sign and send a controlled‑substance prescription.

The hard token key fob is one of the approved 2FA methods and serves the following purposes:

  • Generates a one‑time passcode (OTP) used during EPCS authentication
  • Provides secure access to controlled‑substance prescribing workflows
  • Ensures DEA‑compliant identity verification
  • Acts as a backup if a provider’s mobile authentication method is unavailable or not permitted

Hard tokens are issued to individual providers and are linked to their DrFirst EPCS registration profile.
