Direct Scan Troubleshooting

Direct Scan Compatibility

Direct Scan requires a TWAIN compatible scanner and a Windows computer. Apple has discontinued support for TWAIN drivers on Apple devices (MacOS and iPads) for several years. If your practice only has Apple devices it will be necessary to scan to your computer and import into 4D rather than using Direct Scan.

TWAIN drivers are available for most business class scanners. However, they may not be included in the standard installation files for your scanner and may need to be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Note, Fijistu "Snap-Scan" scanners claim to be TWAIN compatible. However, they use a proprietary version of TWAIN that isn't compatible with Direct Scan.

Troubleshooting Steps

A temporary work around, during troubleshooting, would be to scan the files locally using the scanning software provided with your scanner to scan the files to your local computer then import into the patient account on Forms & Scans > View and Import.

Most Direct Scan issues can be resolved by reinstalling the TWAIN driver. It is recommended that you work with your IT to complete these steps:

  1. Completely uninstall the scanner from your computer
  2. Restart your computer to complete uninstallation
  3. Reinstall the scanner including TWAIN drivers

If Direct Scan still does not work, the TWAIN driver can be tested using Twacker.exe which is a testing tool available from the developers of the TWAIN driver.

Instructions on downloading and utlizing Twacker can be found here: Download and Run Twacker. You should run the 32-bit version, even if your computer is running 64-bit Windows. If you are unable to scan utilizng Twacker, this indicates a problem with the TWAIN driver and it will be necessary to contact support for your scanner's manufacturer.

However, if Twacker is able to scan and you are still experiencing problems utilizing Direct Scan in 4D, please contact 4D support for further troubleshooting.
